My recent work has been an exploration into found objects of my everyday life.
From my son’s plastic toy textures to the Victorian wallpaper that featured in the home I grew up in the 1970s. The woodblock shapes of the foreground are futuristic Samoan fale (houses) that I have been exploring in printmaking for the last 20 years. These have been metaphors for my identity of mixed New Zealand European / Samoan heritage. The figure is the architect of shapes, trying to bring balance to a chaotic world and derive meaning from my memories.

Linocut Edition of 30 Image size: 65.5. cm Paper size: 73 x 52.5 cm PCA Print Commission 2019 ‘Full, Empty’ is a contemplation of paradox. On one hand it plays with a familiar cliché of ‘glass half full/half empty’ but is also arises from the making process of relief printmaking in which matter is removed from a block to form an image. In a relief print the white areas are removed from a mirror image of the end result, unlike common drawing practice in which darker pigments are usually applied to white paper. In the image I centred a symmetrical form, and looking closer at the dandelions there is a mirroring of forms on the left and right of the image. These flowers and seedbeds are in their own process of ‘filling and emptying’ as is the cup with its contents in suspension. The cup references the Ace of Cups from the Tarot.

Chris De Rosa – Gigartina tetra spongia
Lithograph Edition of 30 Image size: 47 x 68 cm Paper size: 56 x 76 cm PCA Print Commission 2019 ‘The Lady With the Dog’ is a two-colour lithograph made with master printer Peter Lancaster. The key image was created with a water-based wash and rubbing crayon, with highlights added using sandpaper and a blade. The hand-sprayed (thumb and toothbrush to be precise) colour background was made on a ground-aluminium plate. The image is of my wife and our dog, a whippet, and named after a short story by Anton Chekhov.
